Currahee Retrievers, owned by Steve Smith, has a remarkable backstory. In 1970, Steve served with the renowned 1st of the 506th, 101st Airborne Division, amidst the rugged I Corp region of South Vietnam. That spring, the 101st Division's "Currahee Battalion" faced some of the most intense combat of the war. Inspired by this brave unit, Currahee Retrievers derived its name.

For the past three decades, Steve has dedicated himself to training and hunting retrievers. His primary objective is to produce exceptional gun dogs that excel in the field or as companions. At Currahee, the finished dogs exhibit unwavering steadiness to the gun, reliable delivery to hand, and are well-versed in working from blinds or boats. The training places utmost importance on control, regardless of the circumstances encountered by the hunter and dog.

Currahee Retrievers is a service-connected disabled veteran-owned small business.

Retriever Training

Currahee Retrievers is located in Tatum, South Carolina. Varied terrain coupled with open water and stump-filled ponds allows dogs at Currahee to train and experience situations that will prepare them for whatever part of the country they hunt in.

Training emphasis is placed on realism, and an abundance of live birds are used at all stages of development. During upland game training sessions, live Pheasant, Chuckar, and Quail are utilized. Live Ducks are predominately used for most water training.

Currahee dogs are steady to the shot and easily controllable in hunting situations. In order that they will be familiar with situations encountered while hunting, Currahee dogs are worked extensively from boats and blinds.

All finished Currahee dogs have experienced a minimum of one hunting season. During that season each dog will be utilized on various Duck hunts as well as Dove shoots. The experience gained during the season, coupled with the formal training received, allows each dog to develop and become a well-rounded hunting dog and companion.

Trained gundogs sold by Currahee will, depending on their age, possess certifications regarding preliminary/final hip clearances and eye examinations/clearances.
